About Me

Name: Jo Carrel
Date of birth: 17/09/1981
Home: Auckland, New Zealand
Qualifications: BHSc(pod), BHSc(physio), PGD(sportsmed)
Triathlon background: I started doing triathlons in 2005 after taking up running and cycling during my school years.  I realized that swimming was the missing link so forced myself to do some swimming and entered a few small triathlons.  In 2006 I did the Port of Tauranga Half Ironman for the first time in 5hrs47 and then completed Ironman New Zealand in 2007 in a time of 12hrs38.  Despite being discouraged by certain people (you know who you are) I decided to knuckle down, get skinny and get fast which resulted in taking over 2 hours off my time at IMNZ in 2009 to come 2nd in my age group in 10hrs23 and qualify for Kona.  Kona didn't quite go to plan due to a fractured tibia so after a brief stint in the Pro ranks I decided to rejoin the age groupers and try and qualify for Kona again to redeem myself which is where I am at now in 2013.
Interests outside of triathlon:  my kitty cat Murfy and fishies, making friends with any neighbourhood animals, pissing around on the internet, baking, eating and traveling
Occupation: Podiatrist at Ganley Orthotics in Auckland.  As far as I know I am the only person in New Zealand to hold both Podiatry and Physio degrees. I recently supplemented this with a Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Medicine from the University of Otago.  Since graduating from Podiatry in 2005 (and Physio in 2003) I have worked as both a podiatrist and physiotherapist covering a wide range of sports and recreation injuries and muscle balance problems.  I am currently just working as a podiatrist designing custom-made orthotics for sports and everyday wear as well as seeing patients one day a week at my own little podiatry clinic Devonport Podiatry.
